The secret life of a female police officer

Welcome to London. Population: 8.7million. And it's your job to keep them safe.

A unique insight to life on the streets of London as a female constable, Girl on the Line follows PC Alice Hearn throughout ten years in the Met, from rookie to constable. As she deals with violent criminals, heart-breaking domestic situations, petty crime, life, death, and everything in between, she builds up a portrait of a living, complex city, and what it truly means to look after it.

From procedurals to gripping foot chases to threats of terrorist attacks, this book covers all aspects of life in uniform, and how it really feels to wear the boots of a London copper.

------------

During my time as a London copper, I used writing as a kind of therapy to help me deal with the difficult jobs. From this therapy, a memoir began to take shape. It became increasingly important to me to portray the real struggles and experiences of front-line police constables, and women in particular. In sharing my account, I hope to bridge the gap between the public and the people who protect them on a daily basis.

The idea that my memoirs might be interesting to other people started to form when I began a writing course with The Writer’s Bureau. I quickly gained praise from my tutors and decided to pitch my memoir to a number of publishers. When I found Two Roads Books, read about their mission to publish voice-driven narratives, I knew I’d found the perfect home for Girl on the Line. Using their online submission-portal, I pitched my idea, was delighted when I was invited in to meet the team, and ecstatic when they offered to publish my memoir.
